The Aulacidae family is to be found world-wide and contains 150 species described to date, although many more await identification. It is a family of ancient lineage and extinct species are abundant in fossil records, suggesting they may have formed a major part of Hymenoptera in the Mesozoic era.

They are parasitoids of wood-boring Coleoptera and some are parasitoids of wood-boring sawflies.
