The Pompilidae family comprises of three sub-families, Ceropalinae, Pepsinae and Pompilinae. It is a cosmopolitan but predominantly a Tropical family.

All 4200 species prey on spider (Araneae), usually with 1 spider provisioned for the larva. All species are solitary, and may use pre-existing cavities or dig their own cells. In some rare cases sand and clay cells are built.
