The Formicidae family is one of the most diverse in all Hymenoptera. To date approximately 10.000 species have been described, with possibly over 5000 species still unknown to science.

All Formicidae form eusocial colonies. A few subfamilies such as Ponerinae display archaic social behaviour, particularly with regards to cast formations and queen selection.
