The Vespidae family comprises of 6 subfamilies world-wide: Vespinae, Polistinae, Eumeninae, Stenogastrinae, Euparagiinae and Masarinae. Only the subfamilies Euparagiinae - essentially present in the Neotropics - and the Masarinae (Hover wasps) are not recorded locally.

Vespinae, Polistinae and Stenogastrinae form eusocial colonies, while Euparaginae, Masarinae and Eumininae are solitary, although sub-social behaviour is seen with the latter.
